Alphabet became the parent of Google in a 2015 corporate reorganization.
Google announced the creation of Alphabet in August 2015, and the restructuring took effect later that year. Alphabet became the holding company, while Google became its largest subsidiary with Sundar Pichai as chief executive.
The reorganization separated Google's core internet businesses from newer or more experimental projects. Businesses such as Google Search, YouTube, and Android remained within Google, while units including life sciences and investment activities could operate more independently.
Alphabet retained Google's existing stock-market listing through a restructuring rather than a conventional public offering. The company became one of the world's largest by market capitalization because of advertising, cloud computing, and other technology businesses. Alphabet is not the same entity as Google, although Google remains its dominant operating company.
