Apple became the first publicly traded company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization based on its closing share price.
Apple achieved the milestone on August 2, 2018, when its shares closed at about $207.39. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying a company’s share price by its total number of outstanding shares, so the exact threshold depends on the share count and stock price.
The milestone reflected strong demand for the iPhone, services such as the App Store, and other products including the Mac and iPad. Apple had already become the world’s first company valued at more than $1 trillion during intraday trading shortly before the closing-price milestone.
The figure does not mean Apple held $1 trillion in cash. It represented the market value investors assigned to all outstanding shares. Apple later passed higher valuation milestones, including $2 trillion in 2020 and $3 trillion in 2022.
