Tesla became the first electric-vehicle company to exceed a US$1 trillion market capitalization.
Tesla crossed the US$1 trillion threshold in October 2021 after its share price surged following a major vehicle-order announcement. It was the first automaker focused on electric vehicles to achieve that valuation, placing it among the world’s most valuable public companies.
Tesla’s market value reflected more than current vehicle deliveries. Investors also assigned value to its battery technology, charging network, software, energy-storage products, manufacturing expansion, and expectations for future growth. The company’s Model 3 and Model Y helped move electric cars from a niche segment toward mass-market adoption.
Tesla is sometimes compared directly with legacy automakers using annual production alone. That comparison misses the different expectations embedded in stock prices. Market capitalization is forward-looking and can change rapidly with views about growth, competition, margins, regulation, and autonomous-driving technology.
