Nvidia became the first semiconductor maker to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in May 2023.
Nvidia crossed the threshold during trading on May 30, 2023, after forecasting exceptionally strong demand for data-center products. Its graphics processing units had become central to training and running artificial-intelligence systems, turning the company into a major beneficiary of the generative-AI boom.
The milestone is sometimes confused with later records involving the world’s largest companies. Nvidia’s valuation subsequently rose far beyond $1 trillion, while its stock split in 2024 changed the per-share price but not the company’s underlying value at the instant of the split.
Nvidia began as a graphics-chip company in 1993. Its CUDA software platform and data-center accelerators helped expand its business well beyond video-game graphics.
