Nvidia became the first semiconductor company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Nvidia crossed the milestone in May 2023 as investors responded to surging demand for its graphics processing units and data-center products. Those chips became central to training and running artificial-intelligence systems, turning Nvidia into one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Nvidia’s earlier identity was closely associated with computer graphics and gaming. Its parallel-processing technology also became important in scientific computing and machine learning, helping the company expand beyond the video-game market.
The milestone is sometimes confused with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which is one of the world’s largest chip manufacturers but was not the first semiconductor company to reach $1 trillion. Nvidia later passed $2 trillion and $3 trillion valuations as enthusiasm for AI infrastructure continued.
