Apple became the first publicly traded company to reach a $2 trillion market capitalization in August 2020.
Apple crossed the threshold on August 19, 2020, roughly two years after becoming the first public company valued at $1 trillion. The rise reflected strong demand for the iPhone, growth in services, and investor expectations about Apple’s ecosystem of hardware, software, and subscriptions.
Market capitalization changes continuously because it depends on the share price and the number of shares outstanding. Therefore, a company can pass a valuation milestone during one trading session and later fall below it. This measure also differs from enterprise value, which accounts for debt and cash.
Apple’s $2 trillion milestone came during a year of major market volatility. It was followed by similar milestones from other large technology companies, including Microsoft, whose valuation also benefited from cloud computing and enterprise software.
