Broadcom acquired VMware in 2023 in a transaction valued at approximately $69 billion.
Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware on November 22, 2023. The deal combined Broadcom’s semiconductor and infrastructure-software businesses with VMware’s virtualization and enterprise-cloud technology. Broadcom announced the transaction in 2022, and regulators in several jurisdictions reviewed it before completion.
VMware had been founded in 1998 and became a leading provider of virtualization software, which allows multiple virtual machines to run on one physical server. Broadcom said the acquisition would strengthen its infrastructure-software portfolio.
Broadcom is not the same company as Broadcom Corporation, the earlier chip company acquired by Avago Technologies in 2016. The combined business adopted the Broadcom name, while its legal corporate structure is Broadcom Inc. The VMware purchase was one of the largest technology acquisitions ever completed.
