Patrón was founded in 1989 and became one of the best-known premium tequila labels in international markets. The brand helped popularize the idea that tequila could be marketed as a high-end sipping spirit, not only as an inexpensive shot or cocktail ingredient.

Bacardi, the privately held spirits company known for its rum heritage, announced the acquisition of Patrón Spirits International and its Mexican tequila operations in January 2018. The transaction expanded Bacardi’s presence in the premium tequila category.

The acquisition did not change the fact that Patrón tequila is produced in Mexico. Patrón’s best-known expressions include Silver, Reposado, Añejo, and extra añejo tequilas. The purchase is sometimes confused with Diageo’s acquisition of Casamigos, another major tequila deal announced in 2017.
