The cocktail named after the 1922 silent film starring Rudolph Valentino is Blood and Sand.
The drink combines Scotch whisky, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur and orange juice. Its name comes from Blood and Sand, a silent film about Spanish bullfighter Juan Gallardo, played by Valentino. The cocktail’s exact creator and first publication are less certain than its cinematic namesake.
Blood and Sand is notable because orange juice and cherry liqueur soften the smoky or malty edge of Scotch. Recipes vary in proportions, and some versions use equal parts of the four ingredients. It is commonly shaken with ice and strained into a chilled cocktail glass.
It is sometimes mistaken for a whisky sour because both can contain citrus. A whisky sour, however, is built around whisky, lemon juice and sweetener; Blood and Sand specifically includes orange juice, cherry liqueur and sweet vermouth.
