The Painkiller is the cocktail created at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke and made with rum, pineapple juice and coconut cream.
The drink originated in the British Virgin Islands at the Soggy Dollar Bar, a beach bar whose name refers to customers swimming ashore and paying with wet banknotes. Its creation is generally dated to the 1970s, when Daphne Henderson served the rum-and-tropical-fruit mixture there.
A typical Painkiller combines dark or aged rum with pineapple juice, orange juice and cream of coconut, then receives a dusting of freshly grated nutmeg. Pusser’s Rum later became strongly associated with the drink and trademarked the name and recipe specifications.
The Painkiller is often mistaken for a Piña Colada because both use rum, pineapple and coconut. The Painkiller is distinct because orange juice and grated nutmeg are characteristic parts of its usual preparation.
