The Bramble was created in 1984 by Dick Bradsell and combines gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup and blackberry liqueur.
Bradsell developed the drink in London and designed it as a modern British cocktail inspired by blackberry picking on the Isle of Wight. The cocktail is usually built over crushed ice, with blackberry liqueur drizzled over the top to create its characteristic layered appearance.
Its standard garnish is a blackberry and a lemon slice. The drink’s bright citrus, gin and berry flavors helped make it one of the best-known modern British cocktails.
The Bramble is sometimes confused with a Collins because both can contain gin, lemon and sugar. A Collins is lengthened with carbonated water, while the Bramble is typically served over crushed ice with blackberry liqueur and no required soda.
