The Hurricane is traditionally made with rum, lime juice, passion fruit syrup and grenadine.
The drink is strongly associated with Pat O’Brien’s bar in New Orleans. According to the bar’s origin story, it was developed during World War II when whiskey and other spirits were difficult to obtain, leaving rum comparatively abundant.
It is commonly served in a distinctive hurricane-lamp-shaped glass, which gives the cocktail its name. Modern recipes vary widely: some use bottled passion-fruit mixes, while others use fresh passion fruit, citrus and different proportions of light and dark rum.
The Hurricane is often confused with other tropical rum drinks, especially Planter’s Punch and the Rum Runner. Its defining combination is the prominent passion-fruit flavor together with rum and citrus, rather than a single universal garnish or glass.
