The cocktail made with applejack, lemon juice and grenadine is the Jack Rose.
Applejack, an American apple brandy, forms the drink’s traditional base. Lemon or lime juice supplies acidity, while grenadine gives the cocktail its rosy color and fruity sweetness. The mixture is shaken with ice and strained, commonly into a cocktail glass.
The Jack Rose was popular in the early twentieth century and became especially associated with the Prohibition era. It appeared in American cocktail writing and later gained literary visibility through references in works by Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck.
Its name has several proposed explanations, including a connection with the New York gambler Bald Jack Rose, but no single origin story is universally accepted. It should not be confused with the Pink Lady, which generally uses gin, citrus, grenadine and egg white or cream rather than applejack.
