Brandy Milk Punch is a New Orleans cocktail made with brandy, milk, sugar and vanilla, commonly finished with grated nutmeg.
The drink belongs to the broader milk-punch tradition, in which a spirit is combined with milk and sweetener. New Orleans is especially associated with the brandy version, which is often blended or shaken with ice until cold and slightly frothy.
Vanilla extract or vanilla syrup adds aroma, while nutmeg provides the familiar warm spice note. Some recipes use bourbon instead of brandy, but the brandy version is the classic New Orleans presentation.
Brandy Milk Punch is sometimes confused with eggnog. Eggnog normally includes beaten eggs, whereas milk punch does not require eggs. It is also different from a White Russian, which uses vodka and coffee liqueur rather than brandy and vanilla.
