Which cocktail has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1939?

The story behind the answer

The mint julep has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1939.

The drink traditionally combines bourbon, fresh mint, sugar or simple syrup, and crushed ice. Its association with the race is especially strong because Churchill Downs serves large quantities of juleps during Derby weekend.

The mint julep predates the Kentucky Derby, however. Juleps were medicinal or morning drinks in the southern United States before becoming an established whiskey cocktail. Bourbon became the standard spirit in the best-known American version.

A mint julep is sometimes confused with a mojito because both use mint, sugar, and a refreshing serving style. A mojito uses white rum and lime juice, while the classic mint julep is built around bourbon and does not require citrus.
