Which club hosted Francis Ouimet's famous 1913 U.S. Open victory?

The story behind the answer

The Country Club hosted Francis Ouimet’s famous 1913 U.S. Open victory. The championship was played at the club in Brookline, Massachusetts, near Boston, where the 20-year-old amateur defeated English stars Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in an 18-hole playoff.

Ouimet had grown up across the street from the course and had worked there as a caddie. After 72 holes, he, Vardon, and Ray were tied at 304, forcing the playoff. Ouimet then shot 72, beating Vardon by five strokes and Ray by six. His victory was one of the most important upsets in American golf history.

The result attracted enormous newspaper attention and helped make golf more popular in the United States. It also challenged the era’s assumption that elite golf belonged primarily to wealthy club members and established professionals.

The Country Club later hosted the U.S. Open again in 1963 and 1988, marking the 50th and 75th anniversaries of Ouimet’s win. A common mix-up is Merion Golf Club, which hosted the 2013 U.S. Open, the centennial year of the 1913 championship.
