Which city was the main cult center of the god Enlil?
Answer
Nippur
Answer
Nippur
Nippur was the main cult center of the god Enlil.
Nippur was a sacred Sumerian city in southern Mesopotamia, located at the site now called Nuffar in Iraq. Unlike cities such as Uruk or Babylon, it was not primarily famous for political empire; its importance came from religion. Enlil’s great temple complex there was called the Ekur, meaning “Mountain House.”
Sumerian rulers regarded Nippur as the seat of Enlil, a supreme divine authority who controlled kingship and cosmic order. Kings from other city-states sought recognition at Nippur, and offerings to the Ekur helped validate their rule. This is why Nippur could wield enormous influence without being a dominant military state.
A common mix-up is confusing Enlil’s city with the cult centers of other major gods: Ur was strongly associated with Nanna, Uruk with Inanna, and Babylon later became the chief city of Marduk. Nippur nevertheless remained important even after Babylon rose to prominence.
