In the Enuma Elish, Kingu held the Tablets of Destiny before Marduk defeated him and seized them.
After the younger gods kill Apsu, Tiamat creates a host of monsters to avenge him. She elevates her consort Kingu, gives him command of her army, and entrusts him with the Tablet of Destinies, a symbol of cosmic authority.
Marduk agrees to fight Tiamat in exchange for supreme kingship among the gods. He kills her, scatters her forces, and takes the tablet from Kingu. Marduk then uses his victory to establish a new order for the universe and Babylon’s supremacy.
Kingu is sometimes spelled Qingu because the name is transliterated from Akkadian. The tablet is usually called the “Tablet of Destinies” in modern scholarship, although the plural “Tablets of Destiny” is common in quiz and popular writing. Kingu should not be confused with Anu, Apsu, or Tiamat: they are major figures in the same creation story, but Kingu is the figure who receives the tablet from Tiamat.
