Which city was C.S. Lewis’s birthplace?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis was born in Belfast.

Lewis was born in Belfast on 29 November 1898, when Ireland was still part of the United Kingdom. His family lived at Little Lea, a house in the Strandtown area of the city. The landscape and stories of his Northern Irish childhood later remained part of the background to accounts of his life.

Lewis moved away from Belfast for schooling and eventually built his adult career in England. He became especially associated with Oxford, where he studied, taught, and wrote many of his major works. That strong Oxford connection can cause readers to mistake Oxford for his birthplace. Belfast, however, is the specific city recorded in biographies and reference works.
