Which city opened the first McDonald's restaurant with the distinctive Golden Arches in 1953?

The story behind the answer

Phoenix, Arizona, opened the first McDonald's restaurant with the distinctive Golden Arches in 1953.

Architect Stanley Meston designed the original arches as large yellow structures on the sides of a new McDonald's restaurant in Phoenix. The arches were intended to make the building visible to passing motorists and to give the restaurant a memorable architectural identity.

The design later influenced the company's corporate logo. In 1962, Jim Schindler combined the two arches into the familiar M-shaped symbol, turning an architectural feature into a portable graphic mark used across the brand.

Phoenix is sometimes confused with San Bernardino, where the McDonald brothers opened their original restaurant, or Des Plaines, where Ray Kroc opened an early franchised location. Those sites are important to McDonald's history, but Phoenix is associated with the first restaurant using the Golden Arches architectural design.
