Which city is home to the headquarters of the United Nations?

The story behind the answer

New York City is home to the headquarters of the United Nations. The complex stands beside the East River in Manhattan and serves as the organisation's principal headquarters.

The United Nations headquarters opened in stages after the site was selected in 1946. Construction began in 1949, and the complex was completed in 1952. The land is international territory, although it remains within the United States.

The complex includes the General Assembly Building, the Secretariat Building, the Conference Building and the Dag Hammarskjöld Library. The General Assembly Hall is where representatives of all UN member states meet for major debates and votes.

The United Nations also has major offices in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi. Geneva hosts important human-rights and humanitarian work, Vienna supports areas including disarmament and crime prevention, and Nairobi is the headquarters of the UN Environment Programme. New York remains the central headquarters.
