Which city is famous for the ancient Colosseum, completed in the 1st century CE?

The story behind the answer

Rome is famous for the ancient Colosseum, completed in the 1st century CE.

The Colosseum, also called the Flavian Amphitheatre, stands in the centre of Rome. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian around 72 CE, and the amphitheatre was inaugurated by his son Titus in 80 CE. Further modifications were made under Emperor Domitian.

The enormous oval arena could accommodate tens of thousands of spectators. It hosted gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, public spectacles and other entertainments. Its structure used concrete, stone and a complex system of passageways that helped crowds enter and leave efficiently.

The Colosseum was damaged by earthquakes, stone removal and changing uses during the Middle Ages. It remains one of Rome's best-known landmarks and forms part of the Historic Centre of Rome UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building's name is connected with a nearby colossal statue of Nero.
