Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland. George Herman Ruth Jr. was born on February 6, 1895, at 216 Emory Street in Baltimore's Pigtown neighborhood, now known as the Ridgely's Delight area.

The house belonged to Ruth's maternal grandfather, Pius Schamberger, a German immigrant. Ruth's parents were Katherine Schamberger and George Herman Ruth Sr., who worked various jobs before running a family-owned grocery and saloon business.

Ruth spent part of his childhood in Baltimore and was sent at age seven to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys. There, Brother Matthias Boutilier became an important mentor, helping develop Ruth's baseball skills and guiding him toward a professional career.
