Ruth died on August 16, 1948, after battling throat cancer. His funeral lasted three days and included a public viewing at Yankee Stadium, a requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, and burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The cemetery is a Roman Catholic burial ground in Westchester County, roughly 25 miles north of New York City.

About 6,000 people gathered at the cemetery to witness Ruth’s casket being interred, while enormous crowds lined the funeral route. His grave became a place of pilgrimage for baseball fans and is commonly decorated with baseballs, bats and caps. A monument at the gravesite depicts Jesus Christ blessing a boy in a baseball uniform.

A common mix-up is confusing the cemetery with one of New York City’s major historic burial grounds, such as Woodlawn or Green-Wood. Ruth’s wife, Claire Merritt Ruth, was later buried beside him after her death in 1976. Gate of Heaven is also the final resting place of several other notable figures, including actors, athletes and politicians.
