Sydney hosts the annual event commonly known as Australian Fashion Week.
Australian Fashion Week is the country’s major industry fashion event and has traditionally been staged in Sydney. It presents Australian and international designers through runway shows, trade activity, and industry events, making the city a central meeting point for the national fashion business.
The event was launched in 1996 by Simon Lock and became a prominent platform for Australian labels. It has operated under different commercial sponsorship arrangements and branding over time, but Sydney has remained its defining host city.
Melbourne is also an important Australian fashion center and hosts its own fashion events, which is why the cities are sometimes mixed up. Australian Fashion Week, however, refers to the Sydney-based industry calendar rather than Melbourne Fashion Festival or another local program.
