Which city hosted the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787?

The story behind the answer

Philadelphia hosted the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787.

The Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787, at the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall. Delegates had gathered there for the Constitutional Convention, which met from May through September to revise the Articles of Confederation. Instead, they produced an entirely new framework for the federal government.

Philadelphia was the political center of the revolutionary era. The Second Continental Congress met there, the Declaration of Independence was adopted there in 1776, and the Constitutional Convention returned to the same city eleven years later. Its role in both founding documents makes Philadelphia especially important to America250 history.

Washington, D.C., was not yet the national capital in 1787 and did not become the permanent capital until 1800. New York City served as the first capital under the Constitution, while Philadelphia later served as the temporary capital from 1790 to 1800. These changes explain why several cities are associated with the early federal government.
