The 2020 coin law authorized five special quarter designs for the 2026 United States Semiquincentennial.
The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 authorized special circulating-coin designs for the 250th anniversary. For the quarter, it called for a series of five designs, making the denomination a major part of the commemorative coin program.
The themes selected for the quarter series included the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, abolition, suffrage, and civil rights. The legislation also required that one quarter depict women’s contributions to American independence.
These five quarter designs are distinct from the dual-date treatment used on some other coins and from non-circulating medals or special gold issues. The law’s authorization concerned a series of quarter-dollar designs specifically associated with the semiquincentennial.
