Which city hosted the post-World War II war crimes trials?
Answer
Nuremberg
Answer
Nuremberg
Nuremberg hosted the post-World War II war crimes trials. The city, called Nürnberg in German, was chosen for the first major international trial of Nazi leaders, held at the Palace of Justice from November 20, 1945, to October 1, 1946.
The International Military Tribunal was established by the United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union, and France. It tried senior surviving Nazi officials for crimes against peace, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and conspiracy. Twenty-four leading defendants were indicted, although some never stood trial because they had died or were medically unfit.
Berlin was designated the tribunal’s permanent legal seat, but Nuremberg offered a more practical courtroom and a symbolic setting. It had been the site of massive Nazi Party rallies and the promulgation of the 1935 Nuremberg Laws, which stripped German Jews of citizenship. Twelve subsequent U.S. military trials were also held in Nuremberg between 1946 and 1949, examining additional crimes and perpetrators.
