Which city hosted the first recorded balloon flight in North America?

The story behind the answer

Philadelphia hosted the first recorded balloon flight in North America, made by Jean-Pierre Blanchard in 1793.

Blanchard launched from the Washington Prison Yard in Philadelphia on 9 January 1793. President George Washington attended the event, and Blanchard’s ascent helped make ballooning a public spectacle in the newly established United States. The flight was conducted in a hydrogen balloon.

Blanchard traveled with instruments and descended in Gloucester County, New Jersey, after crossing the Delaware River. He later presented Washington with a letter of introduction intended to support ballooning demonstrations in America.

The flight is often described as the first balloon ascent in North America. It was not a hot-air balloon flight: early American demonstrations commonly used hydrogen gas balloons. Philadelphia’s role therefore belongs to the broader history of ballooning rather than solely to modern hot-air craft.
