Phoenix hosted the first McDonald’s franchise restaurant, opened in 1953.
The restaurant was operated by Neil Fox, who became the first McDonald’s franchisee. It was built in Phoenix, Arizona, and used the distinctive Golden Arches designed for McDonald’s restaurant buildings. The location helped demonstrate how the brothers’ operating system and visual identity could be reproduced outside their original San Bernardino restaurant.
San Bernardino is a common alternative answer because it was the location of the McDonald brothers’ original restaurant. Des Plaines, Illinois, is also frequently mentioned because Ray Kroc opened his first McDonald’s restaurant there in 1955, after becoming the company’s franchise agent.
The Phoenix opening therefore marks an important branding and expansion milestone. It showed that McDonald’s could carry a standardized restaurant design, menu, service system, and sign into new markets through franchising.
