Which churchyard contains C.S. Lewis’s grave?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s grave is in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry, in Oxford.

Lewis lived nearby at The Kilns and attended Holy Trinity Church. He died on 22 November 1963 and was buried there, rather than in a major national memorial site such as Westminster Abbey or Oxford’s university chapels.

The churchyard is also associated with Lewis’s brother, Warren Hamilton Lewis, who was buried there after his death in 1973. The site has become a destination for readers studying Lewis’s fiction, Christian writing, and scholarship.

Visitors sometimes confuse Lewis’s burial place with Magdalen College, where he taught for many years. Magdalen was central to his academic life, but his grave is at Holy Trinity Church in Headington Quarry.
