Which Christian literary group included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien?
Answer
The Inklings
Answer
The Inklings
C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien belonged to the literary group called the Inklings.
The Inklings were an informal discussion group associated with the University of Oxford. Members and friends met mainly at The Eagle and Child pub and in Lewis’s rooms at Magdalen College. The group was active from the 1930s into the early 1950s and included writers who read aloud from works in progress.
Lewis and Tolkien were among its best-known members, but the Inklings were not a formal society with a fixed membership list or constitution. Charles Williams and Owen Barfield were also important participants. The group’s meetings provided criticism, conversation, and encouragement during the development of major works of twentieth-century fantasy, including Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Lewis’s Narnia books.
