What was the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1943 book about Christian apologetics and human morality?

The story behind the answer

The Abolition of Man is C.S. Lewis’s 1943 book about Christian apologetics and human morality.

The book grew out of three lectures Lewis delivered at the University of Durham in 1943. He criticizes an approach to education that treats moral judgments as nothing more than subjective feelings. Against that view, he defends the existence of objective values and argues that cultures have historically recognized a shared moral order.

Lewis calls this moral tradition the Tao, borrowing a Chinese term for a way or path. His use of the word is broader than a simple reference to one religious system: he presents the Tao as a cross-cultural body of basic moral principles. The final section considers how attempts to conquer nature could ultimately result in human beings losing the qualities that make them human.

The title does not mean that Lewis advocated eliminating humanity. It refers to his warning that technological and educational projects, if detached from objective morality, could undermine human agency and dignity.
