What is the first Narnia book in publication order?

The story behind the answer

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the first Narnia book in publication order.

C.S. Lewis’s fantasy novel was published in 1950 and introduced readers to the land of Narnia, the Pevensie children, Aslan, and the White Witch. The story begins when Lucy Pevensie discovers a passage through a wardrobe into another world.

The book is first by publication date, but many modern editions number The Magician’s Nephew as volume one because it tells an earlier story in Narnian chronology. That difference between publication order and internal chronology is the main source of confusion about the series’ opening book.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was followed by Prince Caspian in 1951. Lewis ultimately completed seven Chronicles of Narnia novels, published between 1950 and 1956.
