Nvidia’s market value surged after the launch of ChatGPT made AI accelerators a global investment focus.
Nvidia was founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem. It became famous for graphics processing units, or GPUs, used in personal computers and video games. GPUs can perform many calculations simultaneously, making them useful for graphics and certain scientific workloads.
Nvidia’s CUDA software platform, introduced in 2006, allowed developers to use its GPUs for general-purpose computing. That capability became especially important for training and running modern artificial-intelligence systems. Large language models require substantial computing power, and Nvidia’s data-center products became central to many AI infrastructure deployments.
ChatGPT was released by OpenAI on November 30, 2022. Nvidia did not create ChatGPT, but the popularity of generative AI increased demand and investor attention for the specialized chips used by AI companies. The market-capitalization increase therefore reflected expectations about future sales and profits, not simply the value of Nvidia’s existing inventory.
