Sauron was the first bearer of the One Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s recorded history.
Sauron forged the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom during the Second Age, placing much of his power into it so that he could dominate the other Rings of Power and their wearers. He first used it openly in the war against the Elves, who recognized his deception and removed their own Rings.
Sauron lost the Ring when Isildur cut it from his hand during the battle in which the Dark Lord was defeated. Isildur kept it rather than destroying it, beginning a long chain of possession that eventually led to Déagol, Sméagol, Bilbo, and Frodo.
Gollum and Frodo are the best-known bearers in the main narrative, while Isildur is the first major human bearer. None, however, precedes Sauron as its maker and original bearer.
