Which character speaks the final words of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Samwise Gamgee speaks the final words of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

At the end of the novel, Sam returns to Bag End after accompanying Frodo to the Grey Havens and reuniting with his family. He enters his home, sees Rosie Cotton and their children, and says, “Well, I’m back.” Those words close the main narrative in the published text.

The ending is significant because Sam remains in the Shire and continues the ordinary domestic life that Frodo can no longer enjoy. His return contrasts with Frodo’s departure into the West and completes the movement from an immense war back to local rebuilding. Sam’s role as gardener, companion, and Ring-bearer for part of the journey makes him central to the story’s emotional resolution.

Readers sometimes remember Frodo’s final statement because Frodo narrates much of the closing journey, but Frodo leaves Middle-earth before the last line. Aragorn and Gandalf also appear near the conclusion, yet neither delivers the novel’s final words.
