Which character sings the song 'Kiss the Girl'?

The story behind the answer

In The Little Mermaid, the character who sings “Kiss the Girl” is Sebastian.

Sebastian is the Jamaican-accented crab who serves as King Triton’s adviser and court composer. In the film, he performs the romantic calypso-style number while Ariel and Prince Eric sit together in a small boat. Sebastian urges Eric to recognize the romantic moment and kiss Ariel before it passes.

The song was written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman for the 1989 animated film. Although Sebastian is the on-screen character associated with the performance, the lead vocals were recorded by actor and singer Samuel E. Wright, who voiced Sebastian. That distinction sometimes causes quizzes to list Wright’s name instead of the character’s name.

“Kiss the Girl” is also easy to confuse with “Under the Sea,” another Sebastian-led song. Both are performed by Sebastian, but “Under the Sea” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, while “Kiss the Girl” received the other songwriting nomination from the film.
