Which character serves as the main human hero of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy?
Answer
Elwin Ransom
Answer
Elwin Ransom
Elwin Ransom is the main human hero of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy.
Ransom is the central protagonist of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. He is introduced as a Cambridge philologist whose knowledge of languages helps him communicate with the beings he encounters beyond Earth.
In the first novel, Ransom is abducted and taken to Malacandra. In Perelandra, he travels to the planet Venus, called Perelandra, where he faces a moral and spiritual challenge. By the third novel, his role has expanded into that of a major defender against the forces threatening humanity.
Ransom is sometimes confused with Lewis characters from other works, especially Digory Kirke from The Chronicles of Narnia. Mark Studdock is a principal character in That Hideous Strength, but he is not the trilogy's recurring hero. Ransom's name also echoes the word “ransom,” a deliberate fit for the series' religious and symbolic concerns.
