Which character kills the Witch-king of Angmar in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Éowyn kills the Witch-king of Angmar in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, the Witch-king attacks King Théoden of Rohan. Éowyn has disguised herself as a soldier named Dernhelm and has followed the Rohirrim to war. After the Witch-king kills Théoden, Éowyn confronts him and declares that she is no man.

Merry Brandybuck helps make the victory possible by stabbing the Witch-king with a Barrow-blade. The weapon breaks the spell protecting him, allowing Éowyn to strike him in the face with her sword. Their combined actions destroy the chief of the Nazgûl.

The prophecy that no man would kill the Witch-king is therefore fulfilled in an unexpected way. Éowyn is the decisive attacker, while Merry’s earlier wound is essential to the outcome.
