Which character is Tommy Shelby's second wife?

The story behind the answer

Lizzie Shelby is Tommy Shelby’s second wife in Peaky Blinders.

Lizzie, born Elizabeth Stark, first appears as a sex worker from Small Heath and later becomes Tommy’s secretary. Their relationship develops over several years, after Tommy’s first marriage to Grace Burgess ends with Grace’s death. By the fifth series, the show establishes that Tommy and Lizzie are married.

Lizzie becomes deeply involved in the Shelby family’s business and domestic life. She is the mother of Tommy’s daughter Ruby and the stepmother of his son Charles. Although she remains loyal to Tommy through violence, grief and political intrigue, their marriage is increasingly damaged by his emotional distance and affairs.

Viewers sometimes confuse Lizzie with Grace, Tommy’s first wife, or with May Carleton, a romantic interest who never marries him. Esme Shelby-Lee is also a Shelby wife, but she is married to Tommy’s brother John, not Tommy. In the final series, Lizzie leaves Tommy after learning about his affair with Diana Mitford.
