Elwin Ransom is the protagonist of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. He first appears as a Cambridge philologist in Out of the Silent Planet, published in 1938.

Ransom is kidnapped and transported to Mars, which the novel calls Malacandra. His knowledge of languages allows him to communicate with the planet’s inhabitants, and his experiences challenge the assumptions he brought from Earth. He becomes a figure who links scholarship, moral courage, and spiritual insight.

He returns in Perelandra, where he travels to Venus and faces a new temptation narrative. In That Hideous Strength, the final volume, Ransom is older and serves as an important leader in the struggle against a powerful organization on Earth.

The name “Ransom” has prompted symbolic readings, especially because Lewis’s fiction frequently examines sacrifice, redemption, and the moral consequences of human choices. The character is nevertheless also a scholar with a continuing personal story across all three books.
