Treebeard is the leader of the Ents in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Treebeard, whose Elvish name is Fangorn, is an ancient tree-like being who lives in Fangorn Forest. Merry and Pippin meet him after escaping from the Orcs who captured them following the breaking of the Fellowship.
At first Treebeard is reluctant to become involved in the conflict because he considers decisions carefully and dislikes hasty action. After hearing the Hobbits’ account of Saruman’s destruction of trees, he calls an Entmoot, a formal gathering of the Ents.
The Ents then march on Isengard and overthrow Saruman’s stronghold. Treebeard is not the only Ent with a name: Quickbeam is another prominent Ent, while Bregalad is his Sindarin name. Old Man Willow is a separate tree-being associated with the Old Forest.
