Which character is the godfather of Harry Potter in J.K. Rowling’s books?

The story behind the answer

Sirius Black is Harry Potter’s godfather in J.K. Rowling’s books.

Sirius was a close friend of Harry’s parents, James and Lily Potter, during their years at Hogwarts. After Voldemort killed James and Lily, Sirius was wrongly blamed for betraying them and for the deaths of Peter Pettigrew and twelve Muggles.

He spent twelve years imprisoned in Azkaban before escaping in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry initially believes Sirius is hunting him, but the truth about the betrayal changes their relationship and reveals Sirius as an important member of Harry’s family circle.

Sirius is also an Animagus, able to transform into a large black dog. His nickname, Padfoot, is connected with that form and with the Marauders’ private identities. He remains a significant figure in Harry’s life until his death in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
