Thranduil is the father of Legolas in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
Thranduil is the Elvenking who rules the Woodland Realm in northern Mirkwood. He appears prominently in The Hobbit, where his realm becomes involved in the aftermath of the Dwarves’ arrival at the Lonely Mountain and the Battle of the Five Armies.
Legolas is identified as Thranduil’s son and later becomes a member of the Fellowship of the Ring. Tolkien gives Legolas a major role in The Lord of the Rings, where his exceptional sight, hearing and skill with a bow complement the strength of Gimli and the leadership of Aragorn.
Thranduil is sometimes confused with Elrond, who is the father of Arwen, or with Celeborn, who is Galadriel’s husband. Tolkien’s published narratives do not provide a detailed account of Legolas’s mother, but his paternal relationship to Thranduil is established.
