Finwë is the father of Fëanor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Finwë is one of the great leaders of the Noldor, an Elven people who travel from Middle-earth to Valinor. He has three important sons: Fëanor, Fingolfin, and Finarfin. Fëanor is his eldest son and becomes the creator of the Silmarils, whose theft drives much of the tragic history of the First Age.
Finwë’s death at the hands of the Vala Morgoth is a decisive event. It leads Fëanor to swear the terrible Oath of Fëanor and helps prompt the Noldorin rebellion and return to Middle-earth. Finwë is sometimes confused with Fingolfin because both are major Noldorin kings and their names begin with “Fing” or “Fin,” but Fingolfin is Fëanor’s half-brother, not his father.
