Arathorn II is the father of Aragorn in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Arathorn II was a Chieftain of the Dúnedain of the North and belonged to the line of Isildur. He married Gilraen, and their son Aragorn was born in 2931 of the Third Age. Arathorn became Aragorn’s father only briefly in the story’s chronology, because he was killed by Orcs when Aragorn was two years old.
After Arathorn’s death, Aragorn was fostered in Rivendell by Elrond, who concealed his identity and gave him the name Estel, meaning “Hope.” Aragorn later became a central leader in the War of the Ring and king of the Reunited Kingdom.
Arathorn II is often confused with Aragorn’s more distant ancestor Isildur, who cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand. Elendil was Isildur’s father, while Thengel was the father of Théoden, not Aragorn.
