Treebeard is known as the father of the Ents in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth.
Treebeard, whose Ent-name is Fangorn, is the oldest and chief of the shepherds of trees encountered by Merry and Pippin in The Two Towers. He lives in Fangorn Forest and initially treats the Hobbits as an unexpected curiosity. Their account of Saruman's destruction of trees helps persuade him that the Ents must take action.
Treebeard leads the Ents and Huorns in their attack on Isengard, Saruman's stronghold. The Ents are not ordinary talking trees; they are an ancient people created to protect and care for trees. Their slow speech and deliberation are important features of their culture, but the attack on Isengard shows that their patience does not prevent decisive action.
