Which character is Aragorn’s father in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium?

The story behind the answer

Arathorn II is Aragorn’s father in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.

Arathorn II was a chieftain of the Dúnedain, the Rangers descended from the northern kingdom of Arnor. He married Gilraen and became the father of Aragorn, who was born in 2931 of the Third Age. Arathorn was killed by an orc arrow while hunting with the Rangers when Aragorn was only two years old.

After Arathorn’s death, Aragorn was raised in Rivendell under the protection of Elrond. To conceal his identity and protect him from enemies, Aragorn was known there as Estel, meaning “Hope.” He later became a central leader in the War of the Ring and king of the reunited kingdoms.

Arathorn is easily confused with earlier royal ancestors. Isildur was Aragorn’s distant ancestor, while Elendil was Isildur’s father. Arathorn II belongs much later in the line and was Aragorn’s immediate father.
