Which character gives Frodo the sword Sting in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Bilbo Baggins gives Frodo the sword Sting in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Bilbo acquired Sting, along with the blades Glamdring and Orcrist, during the journey described in The Hobbit. The swords had been made by Elves in Gondolin during the First Age, although that history is not fully explained in The Hobbit itself.

When Bilbo gives Frodo his possessions before leaving the Shire, Sting becomes Frodo’s short sword. It glows blue when Orcs are nearby, providing a warning during the journey through Moria and other dangerous places.

Sting is sometimes mistaken for a dagger because it is short compared with human swords. In Hobbit hands, however, it functions as a sword. Its name is distinct from Aragorn’s reforged sword, Andúril.
